The head of the Council of Reservists of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ivan Timochko, stated that Russia has not built any new airfields since the collapse of the USSR. He mentioned this during a broadcast on Ranoк.LIVE radio.
According to Timochko, most existing Russian airfields are located in the European part of the country, making their relocation deeper into the territory impossible. This location was due to the political and military situation at the Time of their construction, with a threat of conflict with NATO.
“Moreover, the geographical and climatic location stimulated the construction of most airfields in tropical, subtropical, or temperate climate zones,” he explained.
Timochko noted that the harsh climatic conditions deeper into Russia complicated the operation of these airfields due to low temperatures and the risk of equipment freezing, as well as made their maintenance difficult. This explains why Russia moved a significant part of its aviation to Siberia.
