UNESCO commented on the strikes by the Russian Federation on the historical center of Odesa.


The government of Odesa condemns the shelling of the city center
The international organization UNESCO condemned the shelling that damaged the historical center of Odesa. In a statement published on the organization's website, UNESCO expressed indignation and called for an expert mission to assess the damage incurred.
According to reports, the attacks resulted in damage to several historical buildings and educational institutions in the city center. Odesa, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is under threat of disappearance.
UNESCO representatives emphasized that Russian military actions contradict international law and urged to cease attacks on cultural values protected by international legal norms.
Combined strike on the center of Odesa
On November 14, 2024, rockets and drones attacked the city of Odesa. The attack led to damage to 9 buildings, educational institutions, service station premises, a church, trade facilities, a heat supply pipeline, private garages, and over 40 cars.
One of the damaged buildings is a family clinic on Pastora Street, located within the UNESCO protection zone. As a result of the explosion, windows, doors, ceilings, roof beams, and walls were damaged. Furniture was also destroyed. In total, about 20 buildings were damaged, including educational institutions, historical architecture, and a church.
UNESCO's reaction to the events
UNESCO's representative in Ukraine held negotiations with the municipal authorities of Odesa, and the organization's expert mission went to the scene to assess the damage and ensure the safety of the buildings.

On November 18, Russian forces again shelled Odesa. As a result of the rocket fire, eight civilians were killed, and 39 people were injured. Among the injured are four children.
