Three communication cables between Estonia and Finland have failed. Network developers and operators stated that this will not affect services and communication.
«On the evening of December 25, the Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (TTJA) received information about the damage to three underwater communication cables between Estonia and Finland. Two of them belong to the Elisa group, and the other one - to CITIC Telecom», - the publication states.
The cause of the damage is unknown, but the cable owners are conducting repair work to restore their operation.
An emergency meeting of the Estonian government and a press conference are scheduled for Thursday, where the issues of the emergency disconnection of Estlink 2 and the protection of underwater infrastructure will be discussed.
Disruption in the operation of the Estlink 2 cable
The Estlink 2 electric cable, which connects Finland and Estonia, has been damaged, and its restoration will take several months. The cable owners stated that they will gradually restore services and communication.
This incident has drawn the attention of the Estonian Minister of the Interior, who noted that the frequent occurrences of such disruptions may lead to changes in international maritime law.
Yesterday, there were also reports of damage to another underwater cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden.
Investigations are currently underway regarding the cause of the damages and those responsible for these incidents.
