Can Europe single-handedly contain Russia? CNN Analysis.


In light of the new U.S. presidential policy, which promised to reduce the presence of American troops in Europe, NATO member countries are enhancing their readiness for a possible confrontation with Russia. According to CNN, Europe has sufficient military potential; however, additional financial resources and experience are needed to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
The Need for Armed Forces in Europe
In recent years, the UK, France, and Germany have invested money in upgrading their outdated armies. However, the real impact of these investments will only be noticeable in a few years. The military power and readiness of Western Europe have decreased since the end of the cold war.
Countries bordering the Russian border are most actively strengthening their defense capabilities. The Trump administration views Poland as an example of self-sufficiency and readiness to invest in collective defense. The tension in relations between Ukraine and Russia highlights the deficiencies of European countries in warfare.
Most American ground and air bases are located in Germany, Italy, and Poland. These bases are crucial for NATO operations and global power projection. Additionally, American nuclear warheads are located in Europe, which is an important factor in deterrence. However, Europe is largely dependent on the U.S. in the field of nuclear deterrence.
Germany has used an extraordinary article of the European Union to mobilize funding for defense without violating the fiscal rules of the bloc.
Global military spending in 2024 has risen by 9.4% compared to the previous year, marking the largest annual increase since the end of the cold war, according to SIPRI data.
