The Migration Service explained why it denied singer Yurina Ukrainian citizenship.

The Ukrainian authorities denied singer Yulia Yurina the acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship. Yulia, who is originally from Russia, has been living in Ukraine for 13 years. This denial is based on a law that was passed in August last year. This was reported by the State Migration Service of Ukraine, which stated that the main document confirming Yulia's legal stay in Ukraine is her Russian foreign passport. According to the mentioned law, citizens of Russia cannot apply for Ukrainian citizenship until 12 months have passed after the termination or cancellation of martial law in Ukraine. However, there are exceptions when individuals with the highest merits to Ukraine or those whose acceptance into citizenship is of state interest are allowed to apply. Likewise, individuals who have served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service, or the National Guard of Ukraine, or have a temporary residence permit, are allowed to submit an application for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship.

Yulia Yurina herself admitted that she needs to obtain a letter from the Ministry of Culture to prove her value and importance to the country. She also needs to take two exams - in the history of Ukraine and knowledge of the Constitution.
